What is the Segway Minipro price? This is the magic question! First of all, let’s go back in time. The original Segway started its life about 15 years ago, when inventor Dean Kamen introduced this device to the market. His idea was to change the way humans transported themselves. For those who used the device, he certainly accomplished this. At least for a little while!

Segway Mishaps

Unfortunately, there were a few mishaps. Some of them included things like, when the battery runs out of power the unit would stopped abruptly, throwing it’s rider to the ground (kind of like a stubborn horse). This actually happened to, the then president of the United States, George W. Bush. Not long after this the Segways were legislated to be taken off the streets, and only to be used on private property. So, let’s call it like we see it. One of the best recollection of the early Segways can be seen in the movie “Paul Blart, Mall Cop”. Seen in malls and private areas, but rarely seen on the streets. During this time Kamenn sold roughly 6,000 of the Segways at a cost of about $2,500 each. Dean Kamen eventually threw up his arms, and sold his company to a Chinese firm called Ninebot.

The Evolution of Segway

With the passing of the baton from Kamen to Ninebot. the Segway has truly undergone an evolution. 2015 saw the hoverboard craze. Like the Segway, hoverboards are a self-balancing, rideable platform, although a lot smaller. However, the hoverboards had their own problems. Electrical problems. A prime example of these electrical problems, were  the hoverboards spontaneously catching on fire (bursting into flames). By the time February 2016 had rolled around, all hoverboards hd been banned. Bans would be lifted once the hoverboard manufacturers had received Underwriters Laboratory Certificates, for the hoverboards and their chargers.

Swagtron Hoverboards

The hoverboard electrical fire issues were a real eye-opener for a lot of hoverboard companies, including Swagtron. As a matter of fact, Swagtron manufactured the first hoverboard to receive the Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL) Certificate 2271, for the Swagtron T1, and the ULC 2272 for the SentryShield™ Battery Multilayer Protection. Apparently, these are the safest hoverboards in the world! Check out the Swagtron T1 pricing here.

Segway Minipro Price – Final Thoughts

While the Segway company has underwent such a morphosis in it’s life, it has clearly been a positive scenario for the 2-wheel self-balancing units. Not really “Segway” anymore, given that Ninebot purchased Segway, it was still crucial to maintain the name/term “Segway”, somewhere within the 2-wheel transporter world.  Branding is a powerful marketing element, and Segway is the “Kleenex” of the 2-wheel transporter world. Anyway, Ninebot, using some of the Segway technology created the Minipro, and has done a superb job, at that! Some call it the Rolls Royce of personal transporters. This is why the Segway Minipro Price is higher than a lot of other hoverboards, scooters, and the like. For a detailed overview of the Ninebot Segway Minipro, click here…

Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device (EPAMD)

Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device (EPAMD)Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device (EPAMD) & The Law

The Segway® Personal Transporter (PT) meets all the safety standards, and product standards as set out by the Federal Government. This generally fits into the definition of an Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device. Therefore, the Segway PT can be used on privately owned property, in any State in the U.S., provided the owner of the property has given permission.

In February of this year (2016), 45 of our States, and the District of Columbia have allowed the use of Segway Personal Transporters on bike paths, certain roads, and sidewalks, through enacted legislation. Now remember, not all States are created equal, and therefore don’t all have the exact same laws. Be prudent, and conduct your due diligence before flying out the door with your Segway PT. Don’t getting dinged for not being in compliance. Make sure there aren’t any special requirements that you need to comply with.

***Sidenote: The terms “Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device (EPAMD)” or “Personal Motorized Mobility Device” are used in many of the State laws. By general definition, do include the Segway PT (the odd exception may apply, so do your homework).

In most States, the use of additional laws pertaining to the Segway PT, has been granted to local governments, through the existing State legislation. It is the recommendation of Segway® that buyers and owners of the Segway PT do their due diligence within their riding-area.

Electric Personal Assistive Mobility Device (EPAMD) – Acceptance

While, it has been (and is still) an uphill battle to get the Segway PT the classification required to be an EPAMD, progress is being seen. For example, BART (San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit) is allowing the EPAMD’s on their system, with approval. Apply, using the appropriate application form, and once approved, receive a permit that allows you to bring your unit on BART.
